Our Micronation & Guesthouse

A guesthouse in the Loir Valley, the Consulat de la Boirie proudly presents its rooms and restaurant.

Near the village (but out of sight) of St-Georges-de-la-Couée (Sarthe, France), the seven hectares of the Consulate are filled with gardens, terraces, ponds, arbors, woods and meadows on the sunny slopes of the Etangsort valley. At the heart of the estate is the consular palace, the headquarters for all of Boirie’s official institutions.

The Consulat de la Boirie is a micronation whose independence, after 500 years of submission to various French political regimes (medieval feudal, Royal, Regency, the Directory, the Empire, the Restoration, the 1st to the 5th Republics), was officially announced on the 21st Thermidor, CCXIV (9th August 2006).

The Consulat de la Boirie, a sovereign, pacifist micronation, defends the principles of preserving its heritage, respecting nature and liberating the spirit by culture (and body by nature).

The Consulat de la Boirie is a constitutional government and its sovereignty is based on the executive and legislative authority of the consular triumvirate: Pascalux de la Boirie, Philippéon de la Boirie and Sébastiel de la Boirie. Without being officially democratic, the Consulat de la Boirie assumes absolute authority (at the same time as being benevolent of course), and defends the principles of an enlightened rule. Politically, the Consulate is incredibly innovative, offering a combination of a “participatory dictatorship” and “sociable hedonism”.

The borders of the Consulat de la Boirie are free from any customs posts and access (via the wrought iron gate) does not require a visa, permit or any taxes. The only possible reason for expulsion would be if anybody dared to breach the consular order. Indeed, the consuls are incredibly tolerant and (to date) nobody has been considered persona non grata and escorted to the borders.

You can apply for consular citizenship by writing to the triumvirate, either in return for services rendered to the Consulate (honorary citizens of the Consulate), or simply on request after a stay in one of the guest rooms. Consular citizenship comes into effect when an official consular passport is issued (with all the necessary accolades and stamps). Consular citizenship does not require you to renounce your original citizenship.

The Consulate

Why set ourself up as an independent micronation, and more specifically, why a “Consulate”? Paradoxically, although the Consulate and the First Empire were run by the very same Napoleon Bonaparte, the policies of these two successive regimes were totally different. Far from imperial absolutism, the Consulate helped to pacify France, hold back enemies from the outside, reconcile the French, safeguard art and science, create a decentralised administration, a legislative base and single currency, sign the Concordat, promote education for all with the lycées and, after the violence of the revolution, lay the foundation for the republican values that we enjoy now.

Heritage

Heritage is alive and well. The proof: we only protect what is alive!
Heritage is multi-faceted. Of course there are the cathedrals and the châteaux… But let’s not forget the idyllic country paths, the sweet melodies, the regional languages, modern artistic creativity, and much more.
Heritage is human, it’s emotion, conviction, imagination, invention, inspiration, persuasion, contemplation, admiration… Anything that arouses us with surprise, charm and wonder.
